Welcome to www.letsgo-matlock.co.uk! This website has been created to let people know about one of the most picturesque and charismatic towns in the Peak District.Matlock has a colourful history, balanced with a great variety of things to do and great places to eat and go for a night out, and for anyone who's been before, lots and lots of hills! This sight is an ongoing project, and it is intended for the people of Matlock just as much as it is intended for anyone who wants to visit us. If you have anything that you think belongs on the website or anything you want to promote about Matlock, please get in touch with me and have your say.
Matlock lies at the south-eastern edge of the Peak district, 19 miles from Derby and 29 miles from Nottingham. It is perhaps known for its frequent use in the ITV series of Peak Practise, which a lot of the locals like to watch in hope of spotting themselves in the background! A former spa town, Matlock is situated on the River Derwent, which flows through Matlock Park under Derwent Bridge. It passes through the nearby Matlock Bath, which is a very popular spot for canoeing and rafting. The cliffs that overlook the Derwent are also famous, attracting climbers from all over the world, particularly the largest one of all, High Tor. This huge sheer cliff face has cable cars running from its base that give you a perfect view of these magnificent rock formations. The cable cars are part of the Heights of Abraham, self contained park on top of a hill of the same name. The park is a great introduction to Matlock, and contains a former mine which is open to the public.
This site will take you through Matlock bit by bit. From the gloriously scenic walks through its Derbyshire countryside, the cable cars of Matlock Bath, the Blue John caves, the historic mills and the impressive Riber Castle, to the great restaurants, bars and latest local events. Matlock has thousands of tourists each year. In my experience, no matter where I go in the country, the people I talk to have either been to Matlock or have friends who have stayed there. Considering its size, this is quite impressive! Check out the gallery for pictures in and around Matlock, and the latest articles will keep you updated with what's going on in Matlock at the moment. For example, every year the Matlock Bath Illuminations are held. The River Derwent is lit up by original and magnificent light displays, and little boats and floats are entered by their hopeful creators in a competition to see which one is the best. They are floated down the Derwent at night, covered in lights for everyone to see.
There's also a section on Matlock's history (an ongoing project for me). The small town has a vast and illustrious past from pre-Norman times to present day. It played a key role in the industrial revolution and earned its fame as one of Britiains most famous spa-towns in the 1800s. The History section of this site takes you through Maltock's evolution through the ages and shows points of interest in the town, such as the old ruined Mills at Lumsdale, the gem mines and the old engine house for the tram system used to stand.
I hope that this site is useful to you, and as I am a born and raised Matlocktonian myself, it is important to me that people are interested in Matlock and this charming little town gets the recogntion it deserves (not that I am biased or anything!)
