The Peak District offers a vast choice of dining experiences. Whether you prefer a carvery meal in a traditional pub or the whole haute cuisine experience, there are cafes, bistros, restaurants and tearooms all waiting to take your order. Eating out in the Peaks guarantees two things - diversity and hospitality. The Peak District is fast becoming renowned for its gastronomy and thanks to the rich supply of local specialities, diners can enjoy fresh produce, tasty cheeses, organic meats and robust puddings. Eating Out in the Peaks provides culinary experiences sure to satisfy the heartiest of appetites as well as the most discerning of customers. Peak District cafes and bistros pride themselves on welcoming visitors whether they seek a restorative cup of tea, a relaxing glass of wine or a full-blown three course meal. As far as Matlock goes, the sort of restaurants to be found in this traditional English town are certainly not what you would expect. From delicious pub lunches to Paris-style bistros, you're sure to find something you like. Much like the nightlife the restaurant scene in Matlock is surprisingly metropolitan, with four Indian restaurants lying within a stone's throw of each other. If anyone would like to recommend a particular place to eat or let other people know about one of their dining experiences in Matlock, please get in touch with me at jboam@supanet.com.

The first place I would like to recommend is an Indian restaurant on Causeway Lane just off crown square called the Maazi. A relative newcomer to Matlock, it has been serving for just over 2 years now. Its meals are very distinguished and they take great pride in serving very authentic and contemporary Indian cusines. No vindaloos
or curried chips to be found here! One of my favourites is their Arabian lamb: tender, juicy lamb pieces in a rich creamy sauce of mint, coriander and mushroom. Well worth ordering! There's also such bold discoveries as Tandoori Trout, one of their adventurous 'east-west combinations', Salmon Ka Tukrah (with mustard seads and chili
cooked tandoori-style),and a home-made hot carrot cake with almond and pistachio! Lovers of more widely known Indian dishes need not despair however. Classics like Madras, Chicken Korma and Tikka Masala are also available, and are also delicious. However, I would advise that when dining at  the Maazi that you be adventurous and go for
one of the lesser known indian dishes. The atmosphere is just as authentic and exciting as the food, with the waiters and waitresses in traditional Indian dress, and on certain days, live sitar music is played. A delightfully real helping of India served in a quiet very English town!

Dale Road is probably Matlock's most lively street, leading you past the white cliffs of High Tor and eventually, into Matlock Bath. Every other building on Dale Road seems to be selling either food or drink these days, as you will see in the Nightlife In Matlock section, and it is well worth visiting to sample a few of them. One of my personal favourites is the Strand Restaurant. This has received high praise and publicity over the years, after a glowing review by the Guardian and food guruEgon Ronay who proclaimed it a 'genuine bistro'. Indeed, this is the first impression you get when you open the door: black and white tiled floors with furniture and decorations with a very 1920's feel to it, there's even a little white piano in the corner. It is a really cozy place with a great atmosphere, which transforms spectacularly on the nights when they have live music. The Strand is home to a lot of local musicians, particularly jazz, and they host many different events each month, including wine tastings. The novel food of the Strand defines its cutting-edge bistro image as much as its atmosphere does. Dishes include smoked haddock and chorizo risotto with strips of freshly-cut parmesan, Derbyshire Ham and gruyere paninis, and freshly made soups every day.
